GROUNDING FOR HEALTH: EXPERIENCE ENHANCED HEALTH BY DR. JANNA HOUSE, LIFEHOUSE CHIROPRACTIC, LONDON ON

The Way I See Grounding for Health…

You know how it feels when you go away on a holiday… you feel better and sleep better. I know, there are a lot of explanations for this…you’re away from the stress and busyness of your everyday life, you enjoy a slower less pressured pace, etc. However, walking on the beach and playing in the water might actually play a part. The sand and ocean water are both naturally conductive materials and both help ground the body and remove excess positive electrons. For the same basic reason that we ground electrical outlets to avoid the buildup of excess positive charge, our bodies need the same ground effect. This phenomena is called, “earthing” or “grounding.”

In today’s fast-paced world, we often lose touch with nature, but reconnecting with the Earth through grounding—or earthing—can have profound health benefits. Grounding for health involves walking barefoot on natural surfaces like grass or soil, allowing your body to absorb the Earth’s natural energy. At LifeHouse Chiropractic in London, ON, Dr. Janna House integrates holistic approaches like grounding with chiropractic care to enhance your body’s healing potential. Whether you’re reducing inflammation, improving sleep, or aligning your nervous system, grounding complements chiropractic care to support your overall wellness.

Humans are bioelectrical beings. We constantly transmit and receive energy, and it governs every action we take and every thought we create. All of our movements, behaviours, and actions are energized by electricity. The earth is also an electrical entity. When the two connect, a steady flow of free electrons are absorbed by your body. It neutralizes free radicals and reduces inflammation, the core of most chronic illness and disease. Grounding for health is one of the most powerful natural antioxidants, it’s easy and it’s free!

When I first heard about grounding for health, I must admit, I was skeptical. But after researching it, I realized there is strong science that supports it.

Grounding, or earthing, involves connecting with the Earth’s natural energy by walking barefoot or using grounding tools. This practice has been shown to reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and enhance overall well-being. Chiropractors, like me, recommend grounding as it complements chiropractic care by promoting better nervous system function and aiding in the body’s natural healing process. Together, grounding for health and chiropractic adjustments help restore balance and reduce stress on the body.

The Science Behind Grounding for Health…

Environmental medicine usually focuses on negative factors that impact health, like pollution. Emerging science, however, has revealed a positive environmental factor on health: direct physical contact with the vast supply of electrons on the surface of the earth. Our modern lifestyle separates us from such contact. Research suggests that this disconnect may be a major contributing factor to physiological dysfunction and lack of health.

Reconnection with the earth’s electrons, through grounding has been shown to have a surprising number of health benefits, including the following:

1. Improved Sleep [1][2]

2. Reduced Chronic Pain [1][2]

3. Reduced Stress – anxiety, depression, irritability [2][3]

4. A shift toward Autonomic Nervous System Balance [4]

5. A shift from Fight-Flight-Freeze Response (Sympathetic Nervous System) to Rest-Digest Response (Parasympathetic System) [4][6]

6. Help in reducing Pain [5]

7. Less Inflammation [5][9]

8. Improved Heart Rate Variability [6]

9. Improved Cardiovascular Health [6]

10. Help in Prevention of Osteoporosis [7]

11. Regulation of Blood Sugar [7]

12. Improved Immune Response [7]

13. Possible Hormone Regulation, like improved Thyroid function [5]

14. Positive Impact on Blood viscosity [8]

What You Can Do to Improve Grounding for Health…

Researchers recommend grounding for 30-40 minutes/day to reduce pain and stress, and associated health issues, [5] and the studies cited explain why.

How You Can Get Grounding for Health…

Going barefoot is the most cost effective way of doing this; however, when it is inconvenient to do so, the use of conductive systems while sleeping, working or relaxing indoors is an effective option. I’m trying this earthing mat with cover. [10] (I’ll let you know how it goes, later.) You can get other grounding devices [11] and shoes. [12][13]

A Word of Caution about Grounding for Health…

Lightning Safety

Although it is unlikely that you will be hit by lightning, it is recommended to follow standard lightning safety guidelines [14] as directed by the Environment Canada. Disconnect your Earthing devices during lightning and thunderstorms.

Health Considerations

Grounding for health is safe and natural for people of all ages, but it is not medicine or a substitute for medical treatment. If you have a medical condition, see your physician or healthcare provider. If you are using Earthing products and taking medications and notice a change in your condition, even if your condition improves, please consult your doctor.

In Conclusion…

Emerging evidence shows that contact with the Earth—whether being outside barefoot or indoors connected to grounded conductive systems – may be an essential element in the health equation along with sunshine, clean air and water, nutritious food, regular chiropractic care and physical activity.

Grounding is a simple, natural practice that supports the body’s healing, reducing stress and inflammation. By integrating grounding with chiropractic adjustments, patients can experience improved alignment, reduced muscle tension, and enhanced overall health. Chiropractic care focuses on the nervous system, and grounding helps regulate its function by reducing free radicals and promoting relaxation, making it an ideal recommendation for those seeking holistic health solutions.
